YAN: A family of four was injured when their Perodua Viva crashed into an eatery at the Gunung Jerai foothill when the car's brakes failed while descending from the 1,207-meter-high peak.

Fortunately, there were no customers at the eatery when the car collided with the pillar of the premises at 2pm.

Yan police chief Superintendent Shahnaz Akhtar Haji said the family, from Alor Star, was travelling down from Gunung Jerai when the incident occurred.

"Upon approaching the food court, the driver attempted to slow the car down, but to his dismay, the brake malfunctioned and was heating, leading him to lose control of the vehicle and crash into the building on the left side of the road.

"All of them suffered injuries. The driver and a rear passenger were rushed to Yan Hospital while the other two passengers were sent to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungai Petani for treatment," he said when contacted.

Meanwhile, Guar Chempedak Fire and Rescue Station chief Mohd Fauzi Razali said eight rescuers rushed to the scene upon receiving a distress call.

"Two men aged 36 and 31, and a woman aged 67 suffered serious injuries and were pinned in the car.

"Another woman aged 42 who suffered minor injuries was pulled out from the vehicle by passers-by," he said in a statement.

Fauzi added that the rescuers took about an hour to safely extricate all three victims from the mangled vehicle before they were rushed to the hospitals.
