JELI: A 20m stretch of road in Kampung Seberang Janggut here collapsed yesterday, leaving more than 200 residents stranded as they could not travel to the town of Jeli.

The incident, which occurred at 9am yesterday, was caused by heavy rain and a significant rise in water level from the nearby Sungai Rual.

Jeli Fire and Rescue Station Chief, Mohd Adni Ibrahim, said that the swollen river eroded the road before it completely collapsed.

He mentioned that the incident has left 45 families in Kampung Seberang Janggut cut off since yesterday.

"The 20m road collapse has left the villagers unable to travel to Jeli for their daily activities, including buying essential items and so on.

"We, together with the District Officer, the Public Works Department, officers from the Social Welfare Department, and the state assemblyman, have conducted an assessment at the location.

"We have had discussions, and immediate action will be taken considering that this road is the only means of transportation for residents to leave the village using motorcycles and cars," he said today.

He added that the villagers are urged to be patient while the road repair process is carried out.
