CYBERJAYA: Malaysia produces around 364 million kilogrammes of electronic waste (e-waste) annually, said Deputy Communications and Digital minister Teo Nie Ching.

As such, she said, the ministry through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is collecting the new form of waste to ensure its proper disposal.

"Nowadays everyone has at least one electronic gadget, such as handphones, laptops and desktops and this has led to a new form of waste.

"As such, the MCMC is taking the initiative to collect these e-wastes."

She said these e-wastes, once collected, will be sent to skilled contractors for disposal and recycling.

"These contractors will then extract the elements from the e-waste that can be reused or recycled."

Earlier, Teo attended the MCMC's 'Carbon Footprint En-Route To Nature' programme held in conjunction with the commission's 25-year anniversary.

Also in attendance were MCMC chief operations officer Datuk Mohd Ali Hanafiah Mohd Yunus and its chief corporate affairs officer Datuk Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin.
