KUALA LUMPUR: The Sabah Labour Ordinance Amendment Bill, which aims to improve the protection and welfare of workers in the state, is expected to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat next year.

Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said the amendment bill was originally slated to be tabled in November (current session).

"However, the ministry has been fine-tuning the amendment to ensure all matters related to it have been taken into account," he told a press conference at the Parliament building today.

Mustapha said the amendment bill was being reviewed by the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC).

"As soon as the approval is obtained from the AGC, it will be presented to the cabinet, before it can be presented in Parliament."

He said the amendment would benefit 187,000 employers and over two million workers in the state.

The last amendment to the ordinance was made in 2005.

Among the proposed amendments include increasing the maternity leave eligibility period from the current 60 days to 98 days and paternity leave from three days to seven days.

The Sabah government agreed to amend the Sabah Labour Ordinance, to standardise it with the Employment Act 1955.
