JOHOR BARU: Six temporary flood relief centres were activated in the Kluang, Kota Tinggi and Segamat districts up to 1pm today, due to continuous rain since Sunday which have led to floods .

State Disaster Management Committee chair Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani, in a statement today, said the centres are providing shelter to 298 residents from six areas whose homes were flooded.

"Two centres which were opened in Kluang are SMK Sri Perdana and SJK(C) Ping Ming, which are housing three families comprising eight villagers from Kampung Yap Tau Sah and six families comprising 18 villagers from Kampung Palembang, respectively.

"In Kota Tinggi, a centre was activated in Dewan Kampung Baru Sungai Mas. It is currently providing shelter to 41 people from six families."

In Segamat, 104 villagers from 26 families of Kampung Pekan Air Panas were evacuated to the town's multipurpose hall. The other two temporary flood relief centres activated in the district are Kampung Paya Merah's multipurpose hall and at a hall in Kampung Sungai Gatom.

"A total of 68 villagers from Kampung Paya Merah were evacuated to the village's multipurpose hall. The centre in Kampung Sungai Gatom is providing shelter to 59 villagers," Azmi said.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department has stated that Johor is among the states worst affected by the continuous rain occurring due to the northeast monsoon season.

Adverse and dangerous weather warnings were forecasted until tomorrow. Kluang, Mersing, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Baru were placed under red or 'danger warning' alerts.
