JOHOR BARU: The Johor flash flood recorded a declining trend, with three flooded districts and 1,149 victims seeking refuge at 11 temporary relief centres as of 3pm today.

Some areas in Mersing, Kluang, and Kota Tinggi are still inundated.

State Flood Disaster Management Committee chairman Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani said 11 evacuation centres are still operating, while one has shut its doors, adding that less rainfall is recorded today compared to the previous days.

"There are 297 families consisting of 1,419 people at the relief centres. Fortunately, there are no causalities reported," he said.

Mersing has two flood relief centres, one at SK Air Papan, with 145 people from 37 families and the other at SK Tenglu Endau, sheltering 127 from 38 families.

In Kluang, the temporary relief centre at Dewan MPK Kahang houses 84 victims after water rises to critical levels in Kampung Contoh.

Kota Tinggi has the highest number of relief centres, with 793 victims in eight centres.

At press time, two roads - Jalan Kampung Orang Asli Peta in Mersing and Jalan Mawai Lama in Kota Tinggi are closed to motorists.

Meanwhile, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi advised victims to stay vigilant and adhere to the authorities' instructions.

He urged all state representatives and district officers to remain on standby and be prepared for any eventualities due to the unpredictable northeast monsoon effects, which included continuous heavy rainfall and tidal waves with strong currents.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department issued a severe continuous rain warning for specific areas in Johor, including Segamat, Kluang, Mersing, Kulai, Kota Tinggi, and Johor Baru, which is expected to end tomorrow.
