SHAH ALAM: A committee to implement and monitor the cost of living will be established, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had instructed him to chair the committee to ensure the government's plans to ease the burden of the people would be realised.

He added that the committee would ensure the continuity of other recent announcements made such as the electricity tariff, petrol price and reduction in prices of essential items.

"I have worked with ministers, secretaries-general and directors-general, as well as senior officers in charge of cost of living issues.

"As we can see in the last one month, several announcements and changes have been made after the weekly cabinet meetings and this has allowed the public to breathe a sigh of relief," he said at a meet-the-people session organised by the Sree Maha Kaliamman temple devotee's association here today.

Commenting on the Unity Government's and Anwar's one-month anniversary as prime minister today, Zahid said the federal administration has begun taking necessary to ensure the public would always have food on the table.

The Bagan Datuk member of parliament also called on all quarters to work together for the people.

"Let's do away with having differences of opinions. I have forgiven everyone who had previously said bad things about me. And don't do it again."

In his speech earlier, he said Pertubuhan Minda Sosial Prihatin president Ramesh Rao has been appointed as a special officer to address issues concerning the Indian community in Malaysia.

"It doesn't matter if you are from MIC, PKR, DAP or any of friends of Barisan Nasional. What's important is that we must take care of each other.

"In regards to the foreign workers' issue, I will do my best to provide my views and ask the new home minister (Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution) to resolve this problem."
