KUALA LUMPUR: The New Straits Times celebrates its 177th year of publication today.

Members of the English daily's management, staff and guests celebrated the anniversary with a tea party at the editorial floor at Balai Berita here.

Bank Rakyat, Felda, EQ Hotel, Ascott Hotel and Dominos Pizza Malaysia sponsored a wide variety of food such as pulut kuning, chicken rendang, mee hoon goreng, pizza, kuih-muih, cakes and drinks.

Representatives from these companies were also present during the celebration.

The newspaper printed its first edition on July 15, 1845, when The Straits Times and Singapore Journal of Commerce were published. It later became known simply as The Straits Times.

Taking into account its shared history with The Straits Times, NST is today recognised as the oldest newspaper still in print, not only in Malaysia, but throughout East Asia.

Since its inception, this English-language newspaper has gone through various changes, in line with the frenetic pace of development experienced by the country and the world over the past 177 years.
