NIBONG TEBAL: The Pulau Burung landfill which caught fire on Jan 12, has finally been completely extinguished today.

This news was shared by Housing and Local Government Minister, Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican in a post on his official Facebook page this morning.

In the post, he thanked all federal and state agencies involved in the firefighting process.

"I would like to thank the #WiraMerah Penang team as well as various federal and state agencies for this," he said.

Yesterday, 98 percent of the landfill fires were successfully put out after three weeks.

In the Jan 12 incident, 11.3 ha of the landfill caught fire, causing the air quality near there to deteriorate, which posed a risk to the people's health.

The fire caused the area to be declared a Level 1 disaster area by the National Security Council.

Residents from two villages near the landfill were instructed to vacate their homes and move to two temporary evacuation centres which were opened due to smoke pollution.

Meanwhile, according to the Malaysian Air Pollution Index Management System (APIMS) website last night, the temporary centres located at SK (T) Ladang Byram showed a moderate air pollution index (API) reading of below 100.
