KOTA KINABALU: Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) is taking several safety measures to reduce the spread of fire involving tyres at the Kayu Madang landfill here.

The fire was reported to have started around noon yesterday and had spread to almost the entire area of the used tyre storage site by 3.15pm.

The Sabah State Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) team arrived at the scene at 4.55pm.

A DBKK statement said one safety measure was the use of soil to reduce the spread of the fire. "The work is expected to take seven days."

JBPM estimated that about 4.47ha of the site had been burnt.
