KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) forecasts continuous rain and thunderstorms starting today until Oct 29 in several states.

Its director, Muhammad Helmi Abdullah said this phenomenon would affect several areas in Kedah, Perak, Kelantan, Pahang, Selangor, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan.

However, the other states besides this list would likely not experience any rain or cloudy weather.

"It's still wet in the peninsula from afternoon till late night. This phenomenon is expected to gradually reduce from Oct 25 particularly in the west coast, and mostly in the rural areas.

"Meanwhile, the weather in Sabah and Sarawak remains humid throughout this forecast period. Rain is also forecast to occur in several places in Labuan," Helmi said when contacted today.

He said MetMalaysia has also issued a yellow heavy rain alert in Sabah which is still effective until today.

He explained the low pressure in the waters off Sulu affected the winds and weather patterns in Sabah.

Based on the heavy rain criteria posted on the MetMalaysia website, the yellow alert refers to heavy rain that is expected to occur within one to three days.

This forecast also means that continuous rain might occur although not to the point of continuous heavy rain.

MetMalaysia, via its Facebook, also uploaded safety measures that can be taken by the public to prevent untoward incidents during thunderstorms.

It also informed the public about how thunderstorms are formed, effects of thunderstorms and safety guidelines before and during thunderstorms.
