KUALA LUMPUR: In an effort to raise awareness about the deaf community, NU Sentral shopping centre and the Malaysian Federation of the Deaf (MFD) have initiated a community service (CSR) campaign called “Listen with Your Heart”.

Throughout the campaign period, which ends on Dec 23, MFD will run a booth at NU Sentral that sells items related to and made by the deaf community to raise funds.

“There will also be Sign Language Corner sessions, where shoppers can learn basic sign language from an interpreter.

“Visitors can attend storytelling sessions by the hearing-impaired community, and see how deaf people “hear” and “tell” a story.

“A sign language interpreter will be there to assist shoppers at the session,” said Nu Sentral general manager Alex You at the launch of the campaign this afternoon.

Kuala Lumpur Social Welfare Department deputy director Wan Zarina Wan Salleh said the programme would increase awareness of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the country.

“More government-linked companies (GLCs), private business entities, non-government organisations (NGOs) and parents support group should come forward to work hand-in-hand with government agencies to create better understanding on the needs and challenges faced by the PWDs in the working environment.”
