KUCHING: Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian has urged the public to extend their support to the deaf individuals in the state, helping them to integrate into the mainstream of development, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

During the SSD Charity Food Festival 2024 at the Association of Churches Sarawak, Sim highlighted the importance of inclusivity for the 3,000 deaf residents of Sarawak as well as the role of the Sarawak Society for the Deaf (SSD) in their upliftment.

About10 per cent of the deaf population in Sarawak are engaged with SSD, benefiting from its intervention programs.

"Our deaf community members possess the potential to live independently and make meaningful contributions to Sarawak's progress.

"It's crucial that we provide them with the necessary support through SSD," Sim said.

The event aimed to raise funds for renovating the SSD's facilities, including the video editing room, the Malaysian sign language classroom, and the addition of a new cafe, deaf tuition, and a mini park.

These improvements are set to enhance the learning and social interaction opportunities for the deaf community.
