KUALA TERENGGANU: RESIDENTS of Kampung La, one of the worst affected areas in the Besut district, have started to return home to clean up and check the extent of the damage to their houses.

Mohd Salleh, 55, said his sister’s house was badly damaged as strong currents caused a wall to collapse.

“Luckily, she was not home when the floods hit as she was in Kuala Lumpur to visit her daughter, who had just given birth. My brother, Mohd Yassin, 59, and I took care of the house.”

However, the flood has left the house with extensive damage.

“The cost of repair is quite high. I hope the authorities can offer some help.”

Trader Raja Firdaus Raja Kamaruddin, 24, said his four-month-old eatery, located in front of his house, had collapsed and was swept away by the currents.

“I set up the eatery to support my family after my father was unable to work due to kidney complications.

“For now, I am not thinking about the eatery at all. My main task is to clean up the mess.”

Meanwhile, the Sultan Mizan Royal Foundation allocated RM45,000 as flood relief contribution for flood victims in Besut and Setiu.

Its secretary-general, Mohd Azrul Ismail, distributed the contribution in the form of food and essential items at the temporary evacuation centre at SK Amer here on Tuesday.

He said 180 relief kits were sent to the affected areas in Besut and 120 in Setiu, while additional relief kits would be distributed to other areas affected by the floods.

The flood situation in the east coast generally saw improvement on Tuesday, with several relief centres closed.

In Kelantan, seven relief centres were closed in Kota Baru, Tanah Merah and Machang, and evacuees were allowed to return home in stages.

The districts still affected by floods are Pasir Mas, Tumpat, Pasir Putih and Kuala Krai.

The flood situation in Terengganu has also improved as it had not rained since Monday.

Seven flood relief centres were still open in three districts up to 4pm yesterday.

A total of 899 victims from 232 families were still housed at these centres.
