ALOR STAR: A fire broke out at SMK St Michael, one of the oldest schools in Alor Star, at noon today, damaging two classrooms and an auditorium.

The blaze occurred at Block A of the school that was undergoing renovation. Thick smoke could be spotted for several kilometres from the school.

No injuries were reported, said Kedah Fire and Rescue Department operations assistant director Senior Fire Superintendent I Mohamadul Ehsan Mohd Zain.

He said the department received an emergency call at 12pm and firemen arrived at the school about seven minutes later.

“The fire damaged parts of the ceiling and roof, between 15 and 20 per cent were burnt." he said.

Investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing, he added.
