KANGAR: In the spirit of the upcoming Merdeka celebrations, Kuala Perlis assemblyman Nor Azam Karap has been cycling to every corner of his constituency to hand out the Jalur Gemilang to the public.

Having started on Tuesday, he plans to hand out 1,000 flags to residents of Kuala Perlis throughout this month.

“I chose to cycle as this brings me closer to the rakyat, besides making it easier for me to enter villages and meet with the people without anything getting in the way. There has been an encouraging response... many of the younger generation, especially children, have joined me part of the way on their own bicycles, waving flags.

“Indirectly, it has managed to inculcate a love of our country in people,” he said when contacted.

Nor Azam said he had so far handed out some 50 flags, courtesy of the Information Department, to his constituents.

“I have ordered another 1,000 flags and plan to hand them out as soon as possible. We have also planned to have a programme to have more people join in on bicylces to hand over some flags,” he said.

Nor Azam said his activity also had a secondary objective as cycling into the various areas of his constituency has allowed him to speak with the people to listen to their woes.

“There are some who don’t know how to forward their problems to people who can help, so by having this activity, they are able to tell me their complaints directly,” he said.
