PETALING JAYA: The cost of owning a new car versus a secondhand car was discussed today at a roundtable discussion entitled “First Car, Big Deal” at Robert Bosch Sdn Bhd in Petaling Jaya.

Three panelists from Bosch Automotive Aftermarket Malaysia, Allianz Malaysia Bhd and RinggitPlus shared their opinions and insights.

RinggitPlus founder and director Hann Liew said: “Monthly TCO (total cost of ownership) should be no larger than 20 per cent of your monthly gross income.”

Allianz’s franchise and specialise scheme head Sazali Abdul Rahman said: “Factors such as the age of vehicle, the model, sum insured, insured age, gender etc will determine the cost of insurance. Young people need to understand that their choice of car will affect the insurance cost.”

Bosch Automotive Aftermarket Malaysia marketing manager Go Boon Wah said: “Understanding your car is really important. Learn a bit about your car engine. DIY is key to saving money. Simple fixes like changing wipers will save you on labour cost and always work with trusted workshops that offers the best prices.

“Also, do regular maintenance as faulty part will cause other parts of the car to work harder, leading to more breakdowns.”
