KOTA BARU: Five trawlers valued about RM2.5 million were seized by the police and Fisheries Department in a joint operation that started on Sunday.

The trawlers were detained for using nets that were not in accordance to the specifications in their permits.

Marine police's Eastern Region Operation/Intelligence head Deputy Superintendent Mohd Razlin Abd Manaf said the Ops Gelora, launched under the National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS), also involved police's air unit.

"The operation covered the Golok river, and from the waters of Kuala Takbai to Tok Bali," he said yesterday.

Razlin added that the team also seized 960 litres of petrol valued about RM1,900 which were being smuggled to a neighbouring country.
