SANDAKAN: The Elopura Constituency Development leader Chan Tzun Hei yesterday has raised concern over the safety of residents in Bandar Utama area following the attack on a youth last Friday that saw the victim hospitalised.

He made a courtesy call to Sandakan police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azhar Hamin and brought up the matter and also several other safety issues in the Elopura constituency.

He said he had just met with the victim, Hafiz Abdul Asrah, 21, who was attacked by a group of men at Bandar Utama here on Friday night.

The issue came to light after the victim's mother posted on her Facebook page showing Hafiz lying on the hospital bed.

Chan, who is also Sandakan Health Clinic Advisory Panel chairman, said he managed to meet Hafiz and his family before he was discharged yesterday.

“Hafiz will be heading to the police station to lodge a report on the incident,” Chan said.

“I was made to understand that the victim, who is an employee of a fast food restaurant nearby, was attacked by a group of youths while walking on the walkway at Bandar Utama on Friday night,” said Chan.

The motive of the attack has yet to be established but a woman claiming to be his mother’s friend revealed that several youths had confronted Hafiz who was walking alone at the time of the incident.

She claimed they stabbed him with a sharp object after failing to get any money from him.

Chan urged members of the public to exercise caution when walking at Bandar Utama area at night.
