BUKIT MERTAJAM: A bus driver was slapped with a summon after he was caught on video using his mobile phone while driving.

Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the action taken against the bus driver was in line with Rule 17A, LN166/59 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959, for using a mobile phone while driving.

He said police investigation revealed that the incident happened along the North-South Expressway (southbound) on March 28.

"We managed to track down the bus driver and instructed him to go to the Seberang Perai Tengah police station to assist our investigation," he said in a statement posted on the Penang police Facebook account today.

If found guilty, the bus driver can be penalised with RM2,000 fine or a jail sentence of not more than six months.

Mohd Shuhaily said a urine test showed that there was no drugs in his system.

Last Friday, a 21-second video clip went viral showing a bus driver was holding and fiddling with a hand-phone while driving and his action had sparked an uproar among netizens, urging relevant authorities to take action against the driver.
