GEORGE TOWN: An assemblyman from Perak was detained here after testing positive for drugs.

The assemblyman, in his 50s, was detained at a family karaoke outlet on the mainland about 9pm yesterday.

It is learnt that the restaurant used to be a nightclub and is currently operating using a family karaoke licence, although the setting is similar to a night club.

State Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mustafa Kamal Gani Abdullah, when contacted, confirmed the arrest of the assemblyman.

However, he said the matter was still under investigation.

"We raided the premises and the initial urine test for 36 of the patrons, including the assemblyman, came back positive for drugs.

"The assemblyman was remanded for a day and his remand order ended today. We will complete the investigation and release the assemblyman on police bail," he said.

Mustafa said the assemblyman would be released pending the completion of the pathology report.

"The initial test will be submitted to the pathologist for further confirmation," he added.
