IPOH: Perak police are in the process of applying for suspension of work for a senior police officer who allegedly pushed a woman off the Penang Bridge.

Perak police chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the investigation of the case is being conducted by Penang police but the work suspension process would be done by Perak as he is attached to a district headquarters.

"Penang police are investigating this case and a parallel investigation will be conducted to see the misconduct from a disciplinary point of view.

"Our side (Perak police) are in the process of applying for suspension of work for the officer involved," he said briefly when contacted by the New Straits Times today.

On Monday, a confrontation between a man and a woman at KM2.8 of the Penang Bridge concluded with both of them falling into the sea.

Fortunately, a soldier, who was passing by and saw the incident, jumped into the sea to rescue the two individuals, in their 30s, before helping them onto a fishing boat.

However, it was reported yesterday that police have since opened an investigation paper into the incident under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.

Penang police chief Datuk Khaw Kok Chin said that police have yet to record a statement from the inspector as he is still being treated at the hospital for a fractured left shoulder.

He said that based on an initial statement from the 40-year-old woman, she claimed to have been pushed into the sea by the 37-year-old senior police officer.
