GEORGE TOWN: Police have yet to record a statement from an inspector after a female companion said he pushed her off the Penang Bridge on Monday following a confrontation.

State police chief Datuk Khaw Kok Chin said the officer was still being treated at the hospital for a fractured left shoulder.

He said the officer was still unable to move.

"We have yet to record the inspector's statement as he is still being treated at the hospital," he said when met today.

The woman had told police that the officer had pushed her.

Based on an initial statement from the 40-year-old woman, she claimed to have been pushed into the sea by the 37-year-old senior police officer outside the state.

Police have since opened an investigation paper into the incident under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.

Khaw said police had recorded statements from three individuals to assist in the investigation into the case.

"As of now, we have recorded the woman's statement, the soldier who rescued them as well as the doctor who treated them," he added.

It was reported that a confrontation between the police inspector and a woman at KM2.8 of the Penang Bridge on Monday concluded with both of them falling into the sea.

Fortunately, a soldier, who was passing by and saw the incident, jumped into the sea to rescue the duo before helping them onto a fishing boat.
