KUALA LUMPUR: A bogus policeman, identified as 'ASP Wan Faizul' is being sought by Brickfields police for allegedly "cheating" a 59-year-old nasi lemak seller and her family on Friday.
Brickfields acting police chief Superintendent Arifai Tarawe said the police impersonator, claiming to be attached with the Istana Negara Division, approached the nasi lemak seller at Kampung Kubu Gajah, Sungai Buloh at 9am.
"He told the victim that he was looking for someone to supply nasi lemak to the palace for three months,"
"Convinced, the woman then called up her husband and her sibling. They later got into a car with the man and headed to the Royal Museum (Old Istana Negara) in the city.
"As they got there, the suspect told the three of them to leave all their cash and valuables in the car claiming that the items were forbidden inside the old palace.
"However, as they got out of the vehicle, the suspect sped off and left them there." he said.
Arifai said the victims lost some cash, wrist watches, rings and cellphones, all worth about RM3,000 in the incident.
He said police are now trying to track down the black Honda Civic car used by the suspect. Checks with the Road Transport Department showed the suspect had installed the registration number of a motorcycle on the car.
"Palace officials have also confirmed there's no such person called ASP Wan Faizul working there." he said.
Arifai said the case is being investigated under Section 170 of the Penal Code for impersonating a public servant.
