KUALA TERENGGANU: An Assistant Superintendent and another policeman with the rank of sargeant were detained to facilitate investigations over a robbery in which the victim lost more than RM5,000.

State police chief Datuk Mazli Mazlan said the duo was arested following a report lodged by a man at the Gong Badak police station on Saturday.

"The complainant claimed he was taken by the two suspects to an automated teller machine at a petrol station in Wakaf Tembesu, Kuala Nerus on Feb 1 (Thursday) to withdraw a total of RM5,000.

"The two suspects were identified based on investigations on a photo and closed circuit television recording.

"The first suspect, who is a police officer was arrested on Saturday and is remanded for seven days, while the second suspect was detained the following day and is remanded for four days.

"The case is investigated under Section 395 of the Penal Code (for gang robbery)," he said in a statement today.

Mazli said the Terengganu police regards the involvement of police officers in crime as something very serious, and the force is committed in investigating the case to ensure criminals face the law.

A police report recently went viral on social media showing the alleged involvement of a police officer and rank and file member in the case.

The report alleged that the two plainclothes policemen were using a vehicle with the police logo when they approached the victim.

A suspect allegedly asked for RM20,000 to clear the victim's name, who is under the restricted residence list.

The victim withdrew RM5,000 at the ATM in Wakaf Tembesu and gave the money along with another RM150 to both suspects.
