GEORGE TOWN: Nearly RM800,000 in fines were collected by the state Traffic and Public Order Department during the three-day Penang Malaysian Association of Tours and Travel Agents (Matta) Fair at Setia Spice Arena.

Police had set up a booth at the travel fair offering a 50 per cent discount on traffic summonses. The fair ended yesterday.

Department chief Superintendent Wan Sharuddin Wan Omar said a total of 7,110 summonses were settled by traffic offenders.

He said the highest amount were collected from speeding, the use of cellphones and parking offences.

“The overwhelming response was due to the discount of up to 50 per cent offered during the three-day period. This is part of our initiative to enourage traffic offenders to settle their summonses,” he said today.

The 50 per cent discount did not apply to accidents, summonses issued during Op Selamat, warrant summonses, non-compound summonses, summonses during the course of trials and summonses for heavy vehicles.

Many people also took the opportunity to check their records in the police database. A total of 21 traffic officers and personnel were on duty.
