PUTRAJAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s speculation on Dewan Rakyat speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin’s purported resignation could be considered as an attack against the institution of parliament.

BN Backbenchers chairman Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad said the former prime minister’s recent remark was uncalled for as any such announcement should only be made personally by Pandikar.

Shahrir also said Mahathir should not drag the institution into the limelight when his personal spiel was merely with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s leadership.

“This (Mahathir’s statement) maybe aimed at weakening or creating doubts towards the institution which is unhealthy,

“As a statesman, he (Mahathir) should help in strengthening the political institution as it would lead to greater stability in the country,” he told reporters after taking part in a friendly golf match between the Backbenchers Club and Media Prima Berhad at the Palm Garden Golf Club, here, this afternoon.
