KUALA LUMPUR : New Straits Times (NST) readers recall fond memories as the English daily celebrates its 169th anniversary.

Known to be Malaysia’s leading English newspaper, the numerous prestigious awards achieved by the NST had only proved that not only did the newspaper gained recognition by key players, but also won the hearts of its loyal readers.

Recalling her childhood, a 59-year-old pensioner Raja Zaharah Raja Sulaiman said she could still remember the day when she used to bring the newspaper to school as part of her learning process during English period.

“My teacher used to remind us to bring English newspapers to school and we would read it aloud in class.”

She added that reading English newspaper from a young age helped her get a better grasp of the language apart from being updated with current issues.

“Back in the days there was no internet so we relied heavily on newspaper and the fact that NST is still serving the nation after 169 years is something to be commended.”

Financial planner, Albert Loh, 28, said he had been an avid reader of NST particularly the Sunday edition since he was 10 years old.

“It has always been a routine for my dad and me to read NST every Sunday when we have our breakfast at a nearby mamak stall.

“I could still recall how awkward I felt trying to flip the pages on what was then the broadsheet newspaper NST was producing and not the tabloid-sized NST that it is now,” Albert chuckled adding that he had kept the last edition of the broadsheet newspaper in his home library.

Albert said although he had opted to read the online edition of the newspaper daily, he would still buy the newspaper every Sunday and spend time with his father as he wanted the father-son weekly routine to stay on.

Albert said he reads the NST daily as he found the content and style of writing produced by the NST was far more appealing compared to other newspapers available in the market.
