BUTTERWORTH: A fire that broke out at a Toyota service centre here on Saturday, destroyed six luxury vehicles.

The 1.30pm incident happened on the first floor of the service centre at the Juru Auto City caused over RM1 million loss.

Plumes of smoke were seen billowing from the upscale commercial centre with scores of passers by and motorists gathered at the scene.

A Fire and Rescue Service Department spokesman said initial investigation showed the fire spread from a room on the first floor next to the showroom.

"The fire partially damaged six display cars comprising three high end multi purpose vehicle models - Wish, Alphard and Estima.

"Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident." he said.

The spokesman said four fire trucks comprising 20 firemen and voluntary fire fighting unit took about 30 minutes to put the flames under control.

The blaze caused a brief panic to other business operators nearby who kept their fingers crossed that the flames did not spread to their premises. They counted their blessings when the fire was put out.

The cause of the fire has yet to be identified and the department has not ruled out the possibility of an arson.
