PETALING JAYA: UNLIKE a typical coffee hangout in a swanky setting, Underground Societe, the brainchild of brothers Choong Kar Wai and Kar Heng, is located in Bandar Sunway’s industrial park.
The brothers said they were nervous when they decided to start the industrial-themed sister cafe, Garage 51, also in the same location.
With its incandescent light bulbs and wooden walls, Underground Societe exudes a sense of old-school warmth and cosiness.
“When we planned to introduce a new cafe, we looked at what Malaysia was missing and decided to create something unique.
“With the success of our first two cafes, we felt the time was right for us to introduce a new concept that was unlike any other found in Malaysia.
“Here, we are able to express ourselves in a more meaningful yet non-conformist manner and we aim to connect with those who are bold and in search of something different,” said Kar Wai.
“Over the years, we have reached out to our customers to learn more about what they like and what they are looking for. We have incorporated these findings into the new cafe.
“The word underground signifies a group or movement seeking to explore alternative forms of lifestyle or artistic expression,” Kar Heng said.
“Our focus is on hospitality, quality of coffee and consistency of our food. Coffee culture is always evolving and we are dedicated to continue shaping and growing the cafe scene in Malaysia,” he said.
The cafe’s signature drink, a cold-brewed coffee-on-tap dispenses a smooth, fragrant iced blended coffee.
It offers its customers the opportunity to experiment with their cup of coffee by transforming it into a unique drink, such as espresso mixed with liquors or a latte mixed with a shot of Bailey’s or Kahlua.
The cafe officially opened for business on Monday and offers business lunches from Monday to Friday that come with a complimentary cup of coffee or a glass of wine.
There are also daily promotions from 6pm to 9pm, where guests can enjoy the After Six menu which offers a selection of dishes.
The cafe is open daily from 11am to 2am and is at 68, Jalan PJS 11/7, Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya.
