PETALING JAYA: The Boh Cameronian Arts Awards are back on May 14, marking its 18th year and more than 101 productions in the running for various awards.

Covering the Dance, Music, Theatre and Musical Theatre categories, the Awards, better known as the Cammies, will feature productions that were staged over the last three years.

Organiser Kakiseni's president Low Ngai Yuen said the last three years tested performers around the country and the world with lockdowns and Movement Control Orders.

"Performance art was halted and it was difficult for arts practitioners to survive. But persevere we did, and live-streamed performances became the new normal until things got better last year," said Low, adding that Boh Cameronian grants for new productions helped kick-start new performances last year, and many of them made it to the list of nominees.

"This year's theme - A New Day, Setia Pada Senimu - is a true reflection of the 'can do' spirit of the performing arts industry. It has risen from ground zero with a new sense of purpose."

The title sponsor Boh Plantations' chief executive officer Jason Foo said it was great to see the industry bounce back with renewed vigour.

"May the Cammies continue to motivate us to break glass ceilings and reach for the stars," he said, adding that Boh helped 15 production companies, which were past winners, with RM10,000 each in 2020, as well as 20 new productions with RM200,000 last year.

The awards will be held at the Petaling Jaya Performing Arts Centre in One Utama, Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya, at 7pm on May 14.

A total of 84 nominees are in the running for 30 award categories.
