KUALA LUMPUR: Property company South Malaysia Industries Bhd (SMI) has appointed a former executive director, Leow Thang Fong, who was voted out by shareholders after a 30-year stint, as chief executive officer (CEO) of the company effective May 1, 2024.

Leow, 72, was appointed to the board of SMI on Sep 29, 1994.

According to a filing with Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd, Leow was voted out of the company's board of directors, at a Mar 27 annual general meeting, with shareholders holding 51 per cent of voting shares voting to remove him from the board of directors.

SMI's AGM has been in the news due to efforts by Chong Fu Shen and Honsin Apparel Sdn Bhd to put forward their director nominees for vote at the AGM.

Dr Abdullah Sepien and Leow were the only two directors put up for reelection at the Mar 27, 2024 AGM.

Shareholders voted for Abdullah and against Leow.

SMI's share price was trading unchanged at 50 sen a share 9.56am.
