KUALA LUMPUR: Former national athlete Melinder Kaur is made of sterner stuff as she achieved two Guinness World Records at the KL Sports Arena in Setapak on Saturday.

The 36-year-old set new world records for the "fastest mile (1.6km) in handcuffs", clocking 5:57.34s, and "fastest mile on barefoot", recording 6:04:87.

The previous Guinness World Record for the "fastest mile in handcuffs" was held by Ireland's Sandra Hickson, who clocked six minutes and 37 seconds on May 18, 2018.

A delighted Melinder revealed that her application for the barefoot attempt was approved at the last minute, catching her unprepared.

"For the first record attempt (fastest mile in handcuffs), I was ready as I had trained well. However, I faced some difficulties during the barefoot attempt," said Melinder.

"I was only given a break for about 15 minutes after the first record attempt. However, I told myself to just do it.

"I tried my best to hit below six minutes. However, I am still happy with the record."

Following her new world records, she has raised RM20,000 for underprivileged children through the Gurupuri Foundation.

"I did not do this for fame. It is to help others."

Melinder added: "It is an honour to break two Guinness World Records in my first attempts. I also hold six Malaysian records. I will attempt my seventh soon."

She also expressed gratitude to her coach, Shaharudin Hashim, for preparing her for the two attempts.

Melinder's world record attempts were supported by Sun & Sand Sports, BiiB, and Bainsphysio.
