KUALA LUMPUR: National No. 2 Addeen Idrakie made a sensational debut by stunning Egypt's world No. 42 Karim El Hammamy in the World Squash Championships first round in Cairo on Thursday.

The world No. 65 Malaysian battled for 87 minutes before prevailing 11-6, 9-11, 8-11, 11-4, 11-9.

Addeen will next face Egypt's eighth seed, Tarek Momen, who overcame England's George Parker 11-3, 11-5, 11-6.

Addeen, 30. said: "It was my first world championship match, and I could not have asked for a better start than this.

"It feels really great to upset an Egyptian player in his own backyard. He is ranked more than 20 places higher than me.

''I will have one day's rest before I take on Momen," said Addeen, who lost to Momen in straight sets in the quarter-finals of the 2022 Malaysian Open.

In the women's competition, world No. 37 Aifa Azman went down tamely to world No.8 and seventh seed Tinne Gilis of Belgium, 11-4, 11-3, 11-2, in 20 minutes.

World No. 78 Chan Yiwen, making her debut, lost to. world No. 62 Marta Dominguez of Spain 11-7, 11-7, 7-11, 11-8 in 40 minutes.
