KUALA LUMPUR: National divers Cheong Jun Hoong and Pandelela Rinong dived and surfaced empty handed in the women’s 10 meter platform at the International Swimming Federation (Fina) World Series second leg in Fuji, Japan earlier today.

Both the national athletes were eliminated in the semi-finals as they finished fifth respectively.

At the World Series in Beijing, China last Sunday, Jun Hoong failed to make the final as she finished fifth as well after amassing 312.70 in the B semi-final, while Pandelela had to settle for a fourth place finish in the final after collecting 353.85 points.

Earlier today (Friday), in the A semi-final, Jun Hoong only managed 299.25 points while Pandelela fared better as she notched up 321.10 points in the B semi-final.

"Today’s (Friday) dives were less than satisfying but I did try,” said 2017 world champion Jun Hoong on her performance in the event.

China continued to dominate in the event as Zhang Jiaqi took gold after amassing 390.35 points while her compatriot Ren Qian took silver with 375.45 points. Bronze went to Japanese diver Minami Itahashi who collected 368.70 points.

Malaysia’s other diver competing in Fuji, Nur Dhabitah Sabri is expected to be in action tomorrow (Saturday) in the women’s 3m springboard event.

Yesterday (Thursday), Jun Hoong and Pandelela combined to successfully take bronze in the women’s 10m platform synchro with an overall points score of 310.32 points.
