KUALA LUMPUR: It's a case of one virus too many for mixed doubles badminton player Shevon Lai.

Just when she was looking forward to resuming Olympics training after more than two months sidelined at home by the MCO due to the coronavirus, Shevon has been put out of action by the dengue virus.

BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh said Shevon, who partners Goh Soon Huat, has been hospitalised today due to dengue fever.

The 27-year-old will be out of action for at least two weeks.

"Shevon has been hospitalised and will not report to the RTT (Road To Tokyo) training camp starting on Monday.

"However, there is no rush as the World Tour tournaments will only begin in September and the important thing is for her to recover completely," said Kenny.

"She can return later to the camp when she is fit to train. We will monitor her progress."

Soon Huat-Shevon, ranked World No 12, are in a battle with 11th ranked Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.

Soon Huat-Shevon reached the semi-finals of the Thailand Masters and quarter-finals of the Malaysia Masters in January before the Covid-19 pandemic put a halt to international tournaments.

Kenny added that back-up player Cheah Yee See will be roped in as an additional shuttler as Shevon's absence will leave the mixed doubles training sessions with only three players.
