KEMAMAN: The Election Commission(EC) has deployed a new digital method to help improve the country's electoral system in the Kemaman parliamentary seat by-election.

EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh said the system which is introduced for the first time here is aimed at speeding up the job scope of the EC officers during future elections.

However, he said details about the system could not be revealed to the public until the system runs smoothly.

"We will announce after the EC finds the system working smoothly. We are conducting the pilot test (Kemaman by-election) for the first time and will provide more details (in future).

"The polling station chiefs will be able to monitor all the information in the system," he told reporters after monitoring the voting process at SMK Geliga here today.

Meanwhile, Abdul Ghani said the voter turnout has reached 42 per cent as of 1pm today and lauded the spirits displayed by voters who came out in numbers to exercise their rights today.

"We hope voters including those from outstation will make the trip back to cast their ballots and they still have time to do so. The polling centres will close at 6pm," he said.

Yesterday, Abdul Ghani said the official result for the by-election will be known around 9pm tonight.

He said the ballot boxes from the polling centres will arrive at Dewan Berlian Utama, which will serve as the vote tallying centre.
