PUTRAJAYA: In a direct critique aimed at its political nemesis in Bersatu, PKR secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution mocked the opposition party's president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's back and forth over the decision to retain his position.

During his opening speech at the PKR Annual National Congress, Saifuddin, who also serves as the home minister, received resounding applause from the over 2,500 party delegates when he said that such drama would not happen at this stage.

"The annual congress of Keadilan coincided with the Bersatu's General Assembly. The president of Bersatu made a speech. He announced his intention to resign.

"The speakers then requested him not to resign. 'Don't resign,' they said. The supreme council held a special meeting. They rejected the resignation. 'Don't resign.' Closing the day, the president announced, 'I won't resign'.

"People's, economic, and international issues were not the focus. The congress of the PKR cannot be like that," he said at the Putrajaya International Convention Center (PICC) here tonight.

He then stressed that the focus of the congress would instead be on developing the country in various aspects instead of indulging in trivial matters.

"The PKR congress must address political stability, boost the economy, and focus on the well-being and social justice among the people. And most importantly, practice good governance," he added.

Earlier today, PKR Youth chief Adam Adli Abdul Halim had chided Bersatu president Muhyiddin over the latter's critique of the government's economic policy.

Adam said the government, led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, has laid the foundation for the country's economic trajectory that would address the nation's structural issues.

During the president's winding-up speech at the party's annual general assembly, Muhyiddin was reported saying that the party election next year would be his last time to defend the post.

Muhyiddin also shared a text message from his wife, Puan Sri Noorainee Abdul Rahman, who told him that the party still needs him and he should stay for another term.
