KOTA BARU: Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) today announced Tan Boon Kian as its candidate for the Kota Lama state seat in the upcoming state election.

PRM secretary-general Koh Swe Yong said the party has also agreed to allow Tan to use its 'bull head' logo.

"PRM has already informed the returning officer of the Kota Lama state seat on the matter," he said.

It is learnt that PRM is the first independent party which decided to contest in the Kota Lama state seat in the coming election.

The seat has been a Pas stronghold for many terms.

On Sunday, Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) announced seven candidates who will contest in the Kelantan election next month.

Its president, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, said the candidates included Dr Hafidzah Mustakim, who will contest the Kota Lama state seat.

Kelantan DAP chairman Datuk Azaha Abdul Rani recently said the party was still hoping that its candidate would be given the opportunity to represent Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the Kota Lama state seat in the Kelantan state election next month.

He said Kota Lama has about 38 per cent non-Malay voters, therefore the party leadership at the state level sees DAP as having a bright chance of causing a surprise in the election.

In the 14th General Election (GE14), Pas candidate Datuk Anuar Tan Abdullah won the Kota Lama seat for the fourth time with a majority of 1,445 votes.

He defeated four other candidates including from PKR and Barisan Nasional (BN).

However, Anuar in a recent interview with the New Straits Times expressed his intention not to contest in the Aug 12 election, citing his health as the reason for him not to defend the seat.
