KUALA LUMPUR: Puteri Umno delegates have been urged to widen their perspectives on the formation of the unity government to ensure political stability in the country.
Puteri Umno chief Datuk Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi said although the political assimilation between two political alliances - Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) -may be difficult and feels foreign to Umno members, the cooperation is fundamental to ensure the government can be retained.
"I admit that we might need some time to adapt, comprehend and fully understand the wisdom behind our role in the unity government.
"Some of us might feel like we are in between the devil and the deep blue sea (ditelan mati emak, diluah mati bapak). Is this the best choice for us to defend the party's struggle and protect the people's interests?
"However, unity is core and fundamental towards the government formation, (and) because of this, we became a part of the government.
"(And) for the stability and interests of our people, we uphold the decree given by His Majesty Yang di-Pertuan Agong," she said in her policy speech during the Puteri Umno delegates conference here, today.
Likening the situation to a Malay proverb "biduk berlalu, kiambang bertaut" (burying the hatchet), Nurul Amal said the situation must be seen as a starting point for the members to show solidarity between political parties in the unity government albeit having differences.
She added that the formation of a unity government is not new as many modern countries have practised political assimilation to stabilise the government and benefit its economic situation.
Nurul Amal, however, stressed that while the party had agreed to become part of the government, it does not mean it is eliminating its identity.
"Our acceptance does not mean that we are eliminating our identity. Instead, we are open to accepting a new political dynamic so long that the principles of our struggle are not being compromised or torn apart.
"We are still the same Umno, with the same principles and will continue defending our struggles.
"Hence, this is why we need to find a common ground and meet in the middle to discuss matters that we hope to achieve."
