GEORGE TOWN: Umno will nominate candidates favoured by voters in constituencies it is contesting in the 15th General Election (GE15).

Its vice-president Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said Umno was conducting a survey at every state and parliament seat at the moment, to determine whether their candidate is widely accepted or not.

"We need to consider the wishes of the people on whether or not they want a particular candidate at the state and parliament seats. We will conduct a survey to see if the public can accept them. If there is someone else (acceptable to voters), we will nominate them.

Umno will also consider the views of the branches and make an assessment, he told reporters at a press conference after officiating the 2022 Northern Regional Development Authority (PERDA) Expo here, last night.

Mahdzir, who is also the Rural Development Minister, said this in response to queries on the call for Umno not to nominate candidates who lost in the last general election as they were rejected by the people.

The call was made by Seberang Perak Umno Deputy Division chief Datuk Dr Guntur Tobeng, who wanted candidates who had lost not to be re-nominated because it would affect the party's credibility.
