KEPALA BATAS: Penang Wanita Umno is seeking to contest more seats for State and Parliament constituencies in the 15th General Election (GE15).

State Wanita Umno chief Datuk Norliza Abdul Rahim said in GE14 only one state seat was allocated for the wing to contest.

She hopes that more opportunities and space would be provided for Wanita Umno members to field in GE15.

"We really hope that the party leadership can provide the widest viable opportunity and space for women to contest for state and parliamentary seats.

"This is because women have proven their ability in various fields, apart from having a more trustworthy attitude in performing a task.

"The only problem is that when it comes to elections, seats for women are often disputed. This time around for more women candidates to be featured because we already have qualified candidates," she said.

Currently, the only seat that sees an elected Wanita Umno representative in Penang is the Permatang Berangan held by Nor Hafizah Othman.

Norliza adds her wing has identified the seats that they have the potential to win, if given the opportunity to contest in the GE15.

"We (Wanita Umno) also want to contest for seats that we can win but sometimes we are given seats that are quite 'problematic'.

"But, I am sure the party leadership this time has acknowledged and seen for themselves the abilities of women," she said.

Norliza hopes that Penang Umno Liaison Committee Chief, Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir could consider allocating more seats, either at the state assembly or Parliament level.

"This is in line with the 30 per cent agenda championed by Wanita Umno before, which is to see more women delegates be given the opportunity to contest in GE15," she said.
