MELAKA: Perikatan Nasional will announce its chief minister candidate from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia soon, the coalition chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.

He pointed out that the coalition had many suitable candidates to be nominated to the state's top post and believe it should not rush in making the announcement.

"I will make sure that the people will have the best person to be the chief minister, to lead the best line-up of executive councillors we can offer," he told a press conference today.

Muhyiddin also said PN would not renege on it manifesto and promised that the coalition would do its best to meet the pledges made.

"Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said the manifesto is not a holy scripture. But we cannot lie to the people (about our pledges."

The National Recovery Council chairman also expressed disappointment over the tight standard operating procedures introduced by National Security Council.

"Yes, I myself sighed at the SOP. But I understand why it has to he done. However, I hope the SOP will be relaxed.

"It is really difficult for us to introduce our candidates to the voters."

Meanwhile, Muhyiddin hit out at Umno leader Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad for insinuating several overtures by PN to engineer a state election in Johor.

"That is malicious. Shahrir wants something which happened in Melaka to take place in Johor? What kind of mentality is this?

"Do not challenge me. I am the Bersatu president. I only think about the people. Shahrir is not. Does he want to challenge me? I can just do it at a press of a button. I am not afraid. But I do not want the people of Johor to suffer.

"I can go on and on about this. Shahrir is an idiot. If it (PN withdrawing support from Johor government) happens, the Umno chief minister will fall too. So, is that something smart or stupid to do?

"I'm sorry to say this, but Shahrir has lost his bearing. I will not let what happened in Melaka to repeat in Johor."
