MELAKA: The tight Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP) did not deter a series of multi-cornered fights from taking place in the Melaka state election.

The battle for all 28 seats will see three-cornered fights in 11 constituencies, four-cornered fights in nine, five-cornered fights in five and six-cornered fights in three.

Of the 112 candidates, major political blocs Barisan Nasional (BN) , Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) each fielded a candidate for the seats, while minor parties Putra would only run for five and Iman gunning for one.

There are also 22 independents running in the state election.

At a press conference today, Election Commission chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh said the youngest candidate was a 21-year-old from PH running for Sungai Rambai, while the oldest was a 68-year-old from BN contesting for Pengkalan Batu.

Abdul Ghani also reminded candidates that open campaigning involving physical meetings, would not be allowed to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

"It will depend on your creativity. (To a question) you even can be (going around onboard of a lorry to campaign). As long as you adhere to the SOP."
