GEORGE TOWN: “I will not be cowed. I will continue to speak up on the issues affecting the people.”

This was the response by Barisan Nasional’s candidate for the Pulau Tikus state seat, Loo Jieh Sheng, whose two posters along Persiaran Gurney were torched.

Loo, who is also acting state Gerakan Youth chief, said it was likely a threat or warning for him.

He said the acts of arson would not weaken his will to campaign, but hoped it could be stopped immediately before it escalated further.

“I urge my supporters and BN members in Pulau Tikus to be calm and not retaliate.”

It is learnt that the first poster at Persiaran Gurney was torched at 10pm on Friday and the second, along Jalan Kelawei, at 6am today.

Loo said he had lodged separate reports in connection with both incidents and hoped the authorities would act on them.

“Campaigning should not be marred by acts of vandalism. Parties and candidates contesting should be constructive in campaigning and come out with their own five-year plan for the people.

“What is important is that the local plan for this area has yet to be gazetted, resulting in uncontrolled development,” he added.

Meanwhile, deputy Head of Department (Operations) for the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (JPJKK), Penang Assistant Commissioner Baharom Abu confirmed the incident and said investigation was underway.
