GEORGE TOWN: A Rapid Penang bus caught fire near the Pulau Tikus police station here this afternoon.

No one was injured in the incident.

The Bagan Jermal fire and rescue station was alerted to the incident about 5.10pm.

Operations commander Ahmad Rezki Faris Ismail said when firefighters arrived at the scene, they found the rear of the bus, including the engine, on fire.

He said damage was estimated at 50 per cent.

"According to the bus driver, he noticed smoke coming out of the vehicle when he stopped to drop off passengers.

"He then asked everyone to alight from the bus," he said.

Ahmad said the fire was put out at 6.06pm.

The case has been handed over to the fire investigation team for further action.
