JOHOR BARU: In an unexpected turn of events, a 68-year-old man is contesting the Skudai state seat as an independent candidate.

Kanafatty Krishnan, who was accompanied by two supporters, arrived at the nomination centre at 9.15am.

Outside the nomination centre, thousands of people, armed with party flags, placards and vuvuzelas, cheered for their respective candidates from DAP, Barisan Nasional, Pas and Parti Amanah Negara.

However, the crowd was told to keep their distance from the nomination centre, where some 300 policemen were stationed to keep the peace in the event of unruly behaviour by the supporters.
