KUALA LUMPUR: A family endured several tense moments as an elephant knocked into their car on the Gerik-Jeli highway.

A short video posted on TikTok by Abdul Jad Ayub under the username @jadthechampion showed an elephant strolling along the side of the highway as Jad's family anxiously waited in their car for the animal to bypass them.

Jad and his wife tried to keep their children calm to avoid escalating the situation.

Despite their efforts, one of the children unintentionally startled the elephant as it came near them, resulting in the animal knocking against and damaging the left side of their vehicle.

Fortunately, Jad quickly maneuvered the vehicle so they could leave safely.

The 50-second video amassed over 110, 000 likes on TikTok, where social media users voiced their relief over the family's successful escape and offered safety tips in the comments.

User @paklahrest said: "Alhamdulillah everyone is safe. For added precaution, I recommend Prophet Sulaiman's prayer or softly reciting the call to prayer with a slightly open window."

Similarly, user @girlfriend.girl7 shared her experience: "I've been in a similar situation and only recited Prophet Sulaiman's prayer without making any noise, knowing elephants are sensitive to even the slightest sound. Insyaallah, safety comes first."

Another user, @rynforme, offered advice for those commuting on the Gerik-Jeli highway: "For travelers on the Gerik-Jeli highway, if you encounter elephants at night, avoid using high beams and never honk at them. During the day, drive slowly and avoid drawing attention."
