GEORGE TOWN: Associate Professor Dr Mohd Sukki Othman from the Arabic Language Unit, Faculty of Modern Languages and Communications of Universiti Putra Malaysia, has been appointed the new Penang mufti.

The Penang Mufti's Office, in a Facebook post, announced the appointment of Sukki effective today, replacing Datuk Seri Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor.

Penang Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid also congratulated Sukki on his appointment.

He said Sukki was a senior lecturer and an associate professor at UPM, who was approved on loan by the Public Service Department to the Penang government.

"A native of Penang, who graduated from Yarmouk University, Jordan, along with a Masters in Islamic Studies from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and a Doctor of Philosophy from the Academy of Islamic Studies of Universiti Malaya.

"With his extensive experience and knowledge, I hope that the new mufti can effectively fulfil the responsibilities of leading and managing the department and the Penang State Fatwa Committee."
