NIBONG TEBAL: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia will contest the Nenggiri state seat in Kelantan in the by-election set for Aug 17.

Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the seat belonged to Bersatu and the election machinery had been mobilised.

"We will identify the most suitable candidate from Bersatu," he said during a get-together with PN supporters in Simpang Ampat here this evening.

Muhyiddin, who is also Bersatu president, said the party would not take the strong support for Pas in Kelantan for granted.

"The other parties will work hard to ensure victory for their candidates.

"We are prepared to face the by-election."

Yesterday, former Nenggiri assemblyman Mohd Azizi Abu Naim failed to halt the by-election for the state seat.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court had dismissed his interim injunction. ()

The Election Commission today set Aug 17 for the Nenggiri by-election.

EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said Aug 3 was set for the nomination of candidates and Aug 13 was set for early voting. ().

Asked to comment on veteran politician Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed's decision to retire from politics, Muhyiddin said he respected the decision.

"I don't know the reason. But he previously said he will not contest again.

"That is his choice. He is still a good friend.

"Nevertheless, I hope he will still help where necessary. We respect his decision."

Earlier today, Mustapa announced that he had resigned from all positions and membership in Bersatu effective Sept 30 last year.

He reiterated the statement he made on Nov 2, 2022 that he was retiring from politics after deciding not to contest the 15th General Election.
